GREENSBORO — A man was shot in the leg by a bail bondsman early today.

The Guilford County Sheriff's Office said Sonny Ray Cranford, 42, of 3206 Rockcliffe Drive in Whitsett was wounded in the lower part of his right leg at 1:37 a.m. today. Cranford is in stable condition at Moses Cone Hospital, and the sheriff's office said his wound is not life-threatening.

According to the sheriff's office, an employee of Greg Holeman's Bail Bonds in Durham shot Cranford while he was trying to take Cranford into custody.

A search warrant application indicates the bondsman - Kenard Brown - told deputies that Cranford "came busting through a door and (he) thought he had a weapon as he ran from the residence."

No charges have been filed, and detectives are continuing to investigate. Authorities recovered a baseball bat, three shell casings and clothing from the backyard of the residence, according to court records.

No other injuries were reported.

The bondsman sought Cranford to resolve a $100,000 bond forfeiture for failing to appear in court on statutory rape and sex offense charges, according to the sheriff's office.
