The High Point women's soccer team will travel to Chapel Hill on Friday to play North Carolina in the first round of the NCAA soccer championship.
UNC is the defending National Champion and a No. 1 seed in this year's tournament.
"To be the best, you have to beat the best," HPU head coach Marty Beall said. "North Carolina has proven themselves year in and year out to be one of the best teams in the country. They have some of the best players in the country and in the world and one of the best coaches in the country."
HPU, the seventh seed in the tournament, won the Big South Championship on Sunday, defeating No. 8 Winthrop on penalty kicks.
This will be High Point's third trip to the NCAA tournament and its second in three years. HPU has faced North Carolina in both trips, losing 8-0 in 2003 and 6-1 in 2007.
Duke received an at-large invitation and will travel to Columbia, S.C., for a subregional against 23rd-ranked Rutgers on Friday.
Wake Forest (13-5-2) faces Kennesaw State (11-6-0) in a first-round game Friday in Winston-Salem.
The 64-team field features UNC and Florida State as No. 1 national seeds, while Boston College will compete as a No. 2 seed. Wake Forest and Virginia Tech made the field as No. 3 seeds, and Maryland is a No. 4 national seed.
With Virginia and Duke, the ACC has a league-record tying eight teams in the tournament for a third straight year.
MEREDITH: Freshman LeeAnn Sullivan, a Page graduate, was named USA South honorable mention all-conference team. The defender started 18 of 19 games for the USA South Champions.
MEN'S SOCCER
SOCON: UNCG could only watch as College of Charleston tied the score with 1:18 left in regulation and won it 32 seconds into overtime, defeating Furman, 3-2, and sending the Spartans back to the Southern Conference tournament.
The Spartans (6-9-3, 3-3-1) face top-seeded Wofford in Spartanburg, S.C. on Friday. UNCG will be the fourth seed in the four-team tournament. College of Charleston will be seeded No. 2 and face third-seeded Elon in the other semifinal on Friday.
Last year, UNCG won the eight-team tournament as the No. 7 seed.
VOLLEYBALL
GUILFORD COLLEGE: Sophomore Taylor Phillips received honorable mention all-ODAC recognition by the league's head coaches. Phillips, a setter, played in 26 matches for the Quakers this season and led the team with 653 assists.
YOUTH FOOTBALL
POP WARNER: The Greensboro Giants junior midget team advanced to the second round of the Mid-South Regional. The Giants (11-0) will play this weekend in Winston Salem for a spot in the Regional Championship.
