Residents from the Triad and beyond were recently treated to a phenomenal week of classical music. First, the Guilford College Bryan Series and the Eastern Music Festival presented world-renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma in a lecture/performance.
It was truly a brilliant evening as we were invited inside the mind and life of this esteemed musician and human being, topped off by a remarkable solo performance of the beloved First Bach Suite.
Several days later, Greensboro’s own maestro, Dmitry Sitkovetsky, performed impeccably Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto accompanied by the Greensboro Symphony. The orchestra then played Tchaikovsky’s beautiful Symphony No. 4 in F minor.
The following evening, we enjoyed a performance by Greensboro Symphony Chamber musicians — the icing on the cake!
Our symphony is graced with a world-renowned violinist as its maestro, and the Eastern Music Festival has 12-time Grammy-nominated Gerard Schwarz as its music director.
I have only two regrets. Greensboro does not have a comparable arts center as does Raleigh and Charlotte to house these outstanding organizations and their programs, and a review in the News & Record after these extraordinary events would have educated more readers about the high caliber of talent these great organizations bring to Greensboro.
