(Updated 6:11 am)

GREENSBORO -- Part of State Street will be transformed into a shop local fair Saturday.

Twenty-five local artisans will sell items such as organic crocheted scarves, baby blankets, ornaments, framed and matted photography and handmade bath products.

A booth also will be set up where children can make edible sand-art candy.

Also, enjoy coffee, tea and fresh-baked pastries by Greensborough Coffee (400 State St.).

The fair is the third State Street has held so far this year.

It is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. between Church Street and Golden Gate Drive.

Call 373-0733 for more information.

Rain date is Nov. 21.

Not your grandmother's Salvation Army store

Forget about cramped dressing rooms and cluttered aisles.

This is not your grandmother's Salvation Army store.

The boutique-style store, the first of its kind for the nonprofit, is scheduled to open Friday in the Lake Jeanette Station Shopping Center.

We're talking four spacious dressing rooms, track lighting, wide aisles, display windows and neatly organized departments filled with brand-name clothing.

The Salvation Army hopes the store will appeal to shoppers with more disposable income who are still looking for great deals.

Donations are filling the back room. But they could still use more, including quality children's clothes.

The store is at 3610 N. Elm St., just north of Pisgah Church Road.

Store hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The number is 273-5572.

Help Santa feed the needy

Donate canned and nonperishable food at the mall and get a $2 discount on family photo packages with Santa.

You also get first dibs on a free, 200-plus page mall coupon book that's good during the holiday season. Participating retailers include Friendly Center, Hanes Mall, Oak Hollow Mall and Randolph Mall.

Alamance Crossing does not have a Santa. But the mall is collecting donated food at its Carousel Cinemas movie theater. In exchange, you get a free small popcorn.

The food drive is now through the end of December.

The Second Harvest Food Bank will use the food to help the needy during the holidays and next year.

Gotcha Covered moving

Gotcha Covered (806 Friendly Center Road; 855-5855), a gift and novelty store at Friendly Center, is having a moving sale.

All throws (excluding college), handbags, lighthouses, music boxes and Boys Bears plush and resin are half off.

The sale is going on indefinitely, said Sue Buescher, owner of Gotcha Covered, which recently moved to a different spot in Friendly Center.

You'll find the store between Poblano's Mexican Bar & Grill and Hallmark.

CVS, Lowes Foods coming

Construction workers recently began clearing trees and brush at Church Street and N.C. 150 to pave the way for a new shopping center.

The 13,000-square-foot Shoppes at Gunter's Crossing will include a Lowes Foods and CVS, according to a billboard on the corner.

Tom Flanagan, one of the shopping center's leasing brokers, said the shopping center is expected to open sometime in the third quarter of 2010.

Mechelle's Resale Shoppe

Mechelle's Resale Shoppe (403 State St.; 574-4496) has new store hours through the holidays and some special deals, too.

Hours are now 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The store also has 30 to 50 percent off all numbered, consigned items and 20 percent off most new items.

New holiday wear and decor is also arriving daily.

Facial rejuvenation deals

Get discounts on products and facial rejuvenation services while helping women in need.

The Greensboro Center for Facial Rejuvenation (1132 N. Church St., Suite 201, 358-4269), is having an open house from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

The event will feature seminars on Botox, laser therapy, medical skin care, mineral makeup and dermal fillers. Discounts on products and services also will be offered.

In exchange, organizers ask you to donate new or gently used women's business clothes or accessories.

The clothes will benefit Dress for Success, an international nonprofit that promotes economic independence for women by providing professional attire and career help.

Fight hunger for discounts

The more food you donate, the more you save at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore shops in the Triad.

The stores are teaming up with the Second Harvest Food Bank to fight hunger by holding a holiday food drive through December.

That means for every nonperishable food item donated, you get $1 off a $10 purchase.

Habitat for Humanity suggests donating food such as canned meals including soups, canned meats including chicken and tuna, peanut butter, canned vegetables and fruits.
