Photo provoked fear

In the current atmosphere of fear in our country around H1N1, germs and danger, I was dismayed to see the front-page picture of a UNCG student getting his shot (Oct. 30). This is not the picture I would choose if I were encouraging folks to get this vaccine. The needle is tiny and the shot is over in no time.

How about a picture of a calm, cheery person next time to help allay some of the fear and hesitation over getting the vaccine?

Perhaps I am wrong, but I assume not all letters sent to the N-R get published. Working on that assumption, how many more letters about this photo will appear? Enough already! This fellow clearly does not like shots; there are many others out there who "feel his pain." But he took his vaccination any way. That is the point to walk away with - despite the fact that he is not fond of needles/shots, the vaccination was important enough to endure the discomfort.

Interested - I agree with you but I think the point here is not the story, but instead the photo chosen to accompany it. For a kid glancing at Mom and Dad's newspaper, I'm betting that photo looked a little scary. For the person you described as "not liking shots", the selected photo certainly did not do them any favors.

Whatever, anyone over the age of 1 has had a shot. And while I'm not aware of anyone who enjoys them, many are ambivalent. Others have an irrational fear or an overreaction. It's important that you get vaccinated. It's important for you, your family, and your classmates or coworkers. The guy on the front page knew that and got the shot...regardless of his fear of needles. And, for most healthy people, the nasal spray is also available, and, heck, I prefer the needle.
