GREENSBORO — Four people charged in connection with a July hit-and-run accident that left a woman dead inside a car along U.S. 29 were among those indicted this week by a grand jury.

A Guilford County grand jury indicted Shaquetta Denise Johnson, 26, Shelton Jerome Phelps, 30, Alton V. Womack Jr., 26, and Clarence “Tony” William Phelps IV, 27, in connection with the death of 23-year-old Cherita Jones.

The crash happened about 3 a.m. July 27. Police said Johnson was driving northbound on U.S. 29 when her 2004 Acura left the road and rolled three times near the old Bothwell Street exit.

Jones, a passenger, was killed in the crash.

About the same time, a dark gray 2006 BMW sedan left the road nearby, hit a concrete retaining wall and ended up in the southbound lane. Four people left the BMW at the scene.

A Chevrolet Tahoe then pulled up next to the Acura, and the people in the SUV pulled Johnson from the crash and drove away. Jones was left in the vehicle.

Johnson was indicted on charges of involuntary manslaughter and hit-and-run inflicting serious injury.

Womack, Shelton Phelps and Tony Phelps were indicted on charges of aiding and abetting.

Another man, William Donzelle McKinney, 27, was charged with felony hit-and-run in connection with the crash, but was not among those indicted this week.

Police believe the group had left B.G. McGhee’s, a sports bar on High Point Road, before the crash.

An investigation of the incident is ongoing.
