Rockingham People: County health group receives recertification

Sunday, November 8, 2009
(Updated 2:00 am)

The Governor’s Task Force for Healthy Carolinians has recertified the Rockingham County Healthy Carolinians Partnership.

The organization was recertified during the 17th annual Healthy Carolinians Conference on Oct. 8 in Greensboro.

The recognition means the Rockingham County group remains an important part of the network of certified partnerships across the state working to improve the health of residents.

Healthy Carolinians relies on community members to identify health and safety issues and to help plan solutions to the problems. Partnerships must submit applications to be recertified. The Governor’s Task Force issues recertification using rigorous standards based on community health improvements.

Abigail has been awarded a maximum of $20,000 from the College Foundation of North Carolina as part of the Victor E. Bell Jr. Scholarship Program. Abigail, a student at Western Rockingham Middle School, is one of 10 winners in the state.

The scholarship program allows Abigail to receive $2,000 a year from middle school through four years of college, granted she meets certain criteria.

Middle school guidance counselors, principals and college readiness groups nominate students for the award. Students are selected through a random drawing.
