REIDSVILLE — A convicted sex offender who the sheriff's office said was illegally living near a school faces charges including failing to register as a sex offender.
Edward Nathan Avery II, 40, was arrested Tuesday at 1:25 p.m. at a relative's home at 106 S. Washington Ave. in Reidsville, according to the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office.
The house is across from Carolina Baptist Academy. Avery broke the law by living there because sex offenders are not allowed to live that close to a school, according to the sheriff's office.
Avery had received a letter by certified mail at 238 Penn Lake Drive in Reidsville but did not return the letter as ordered, the sheriff's office said.
He was charged with failing to register as a sex offender and a charge related to being too close to a school.
Avery was being held in the Rockingham County jail under a $150,000 bond.
Avery served a 12-year sentence after he was convicted in 1986 of attempted rape or attempted sex offense, according to the N.C. Department of Justice.
