MADISON — Voters here returned their mayor and two incumbent aldermen to office, and elected a retired police officer to the Board of Aldermen.

Mayor Micky Silvers received 69 percent of the vote to win a second term Tuesday, according to complete but unofficial results.

Silvers defeated challenger Christopher Phillips, who received 30 percent of the vote. Write-in candidates received less than 1 percent of the vote.

Aldermen Janice Richardson Tate and Arthur Gwaltney retained their seats by capturing 26 and 25 percent of the vote, respectively. D.R. “Bubba” Stewart, a retired Madison police officer, won the third available seat on the board with 23 percent of the vote.

Justin Terrell received 14 percent of the vote while Charles Mann received almost 11 percent. Less than 1 percent of the vote went to write-in candidates.

Stewart, who campaigned on controlling the town’s water and sewer rates, could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.

Silvers said he was pleased to see the competition in this year’s race. “We had a campaign in the town,” he said Tuesday night. “It wasn’t a shoe-in for anybody.”

In Stoneville, longtime Mayor Rex Tuggle kept his seat by capturing 59 percent of the vote. Challenger Robert Stowe received about 40 percent.

With more than 17 percent of the vote, Ricky Craddock was the top vote-getter in the crowded race for the five available seats on the Stoneville Town Council. Eight people, including one write-in candidate, sought those seats.

Craddock previously held a seat on the board for 10 years. Write-in candidates edged out longtime council member James “Gen” Scales by taking more than 14 percent of the vote. Jerry L. Smith filed Oct. 26 to run a write-in campaign. His name did not appear on the ballot, so voters had to write his name on the ballot. It was unclear Tuesday night whether all the 169 write-in votes went to Smith.

Three incumbents regained their seats. Jodi Lester captured 13 percent of the vote, and Eugene DeMoss and Jerry Odell each received more than 11 percent. Scales received just under 11 percent. Johnny Farmer garnered about 10 percent of the vote, while Glynda Shelton received 9 percent.

Races in Eden, Mayodan and Wentworth were uncontested.

Of 15,149 registered voters in the municipalities, only 1,363 voted Tuesday, according to the Rockingham County Board of Elections.
