Caught in the act: Wrong-way truck

Tuesday, November 3, 2009
(Updated 11:38 am)

GREENSBORO — Yes, Market Street commuters, that was an 18-wheeler heading right at you this morning.

Here's the proof in the picture to the right.

About 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, the tractor-trailer in this picture was going north on Church Street when it took a left onto East Market Street and went the wrong way up Market in front of the News & Record.

As ongoing drivers honked their horns, the truck driver turned right — the right way — onto Davie Street.

No accidents or injuries were reported.

This was a Mabe's Truck. Did someone report the driver? This is terrible and should be reported, he/she put hundreds of people's lives at risk by driving the wrong way down a busy street in the middle of the morning.

Vehicles driving the wrong way happen everyday downtown. It is particularly distressful when you're walking across a one way street and only looking for vehicles driving in the correct direction. Too scary, have witnessed more than one too close for comfort incident with pedestrians.

This happens all the time downtown, though rarely 18-wheelers. I don't think the one-way streets are marked very well personally. Glad nobody was hurt, and glad he didn't get stuck under the railroad trestle on Market and Murrow.

Interestingly, you don't see a single one-way sign or marking on the pavement to indicate this is a one-way street. As someone guilty of having done this myself long ago, I can relate.

A truck driver makes a mistake, probably a very legitimate one at that, and gets his photo pasted in the paper."Caught in the act" headline makes it sound like it was intentional.Give me a break, sheeeesh.

It probably wasn't intentional but if this truck was headed right for you I bet then it would be a different situation-SHEESH!!!

Hmm-where are the cops whenever this thing happens? It happens alot lately and either it is because the driver cannot read the sings due to being non
egnlish speaking and still getting a license, or the signs are not posted adequestely to know it is a one way street or a combination of both and yeah-it is posted all over the news because of it happening-

Let's see... There's a fairly large "one way" sign, no center yellow dividing line, a big, bold, white "stop" line across the entire road for east-bound traffic, a big "left turn only" arrow facing him in the lane he turned into... Yep, you're right: poorly marked. ;-)

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Okay this mess always happens on this street. most of the time people are on their cell phones and not paying attention. News-Record... let me comment on something worthwhile like the motorist who hit the man on the bike....Who decides what we can comment on?

We typically do not open comments on crime stories, as the discussion often delves into attacks, speculation and name calling that goes against our terms of service and, in our opinion, doesn't further the story. An earlier article about the fatal wreck did have comments open, but we had to close them after a day or so due to spending too much time deleting insensitive remarks and attacks.
