GREENSBORO – A man shot himself Monday afternoon when officers confronted him outside his home, according to police.
The shooting happened just before 3:30 p.m. at 36 Brandy Court, said Capt. Janice Rogers with Greensboro police.
Officers responded to a 911 call regarding a suicidal man armed with a handgun at the home.
They arrived to find the man in the backyard of the residence with a handgun. Officers confronted the man and deployed a Taser.
However, the man was able to shoot himself, Rogers said. The investigation has been handed over the SBI per request of Greensboro police.
Rogers referred questions about the man’s identity and condition to the SBI. A spokeswoman for the agency did not return a message seeking comment.
However, a man whose name is registered at that address is reported to be in critical condition at Moses Cone.
Emergency radio traffic from the incident indicated he is 60 years old.
The police department's Professional Standards Division is also conducting an independent investigation of the incident.
