CHIMNEY ROCK — Chimney Rock State Park has closed its elevator today for repairs.

Park officials did not say how long the project will take. The pack will remain open during the maintenance. Admission prices will be reduced to $9 for adults and $5 for children 6 to 15.

Guests can still reach the Park’s namesake, the 315-foot Chimney Rock, by hiking the half-mile Outcroppings trail from the upper parking lot.

Construction of the 26-story elevator began in 1948 when crews used eight tons of dynamite to blast the 198-foot tunnel and 258-foot shaft into the solid granite mountain. When it opened to the public in 1949, the elevator was the tallest in the state.

The maintenance project that starts today includes replacing the elevator’s guide rails and hoist ropes.
