The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is running TV ads saying that current health care reform includes more than $300 billion in new taxes and the Congressional Budget Office says you’re going to pay for it. Sounds believable — heck, I almost believed it myself. But let’s look at the facts.
The CBO says the Senate Finance Committee reform bill will cost $829 billion over 10 years and will lower the deficit by $81 billion over those years. It achieves the goal of covering more people and lowering cost. And it certainly does not create “government control over your health,” another Chamber scare tactic. The Chamber on this issue, like many critics is, well, dishonest.
Oddly, the Chamber is fighting health care reform even though most of its members are small businesses struggling to cover their employees and could do so more easily with reform. And think about it: When did the U.S. Chamber of Commerce ever fight for health care reform?
Now they disingenuously say, “Let’s have real reform” — as if we should believe anything they say about health care reform.
