Another downtown restaurant closing

GREENSBORO — Solaris Tapas Restaurant and Bar, 125 Summit  Ave., is closing.

"I don't think tapas quite caught on the way it has in other sizable cities," says Jack Reynolds, who owns the restaurant with his son Christian who is the executive chef.

Reynolds says business has been down 10 to 20 percent recently. So then they were approached by a couple looking to open a restaurant in Greensboro, they took the offer.

"Once this offer came, we just couldn't justify staying open," Reynolds says.

Solaris opened over six years ago bringing tapas - a concept made popular in Spain of serving small portions with wine - to downtown Greensboro.

Two years ago, Rim Tapas and Fine Wine Bar gave the concept a run on Elm Street before closing last August.

Reynolds says the new owners plan to open the restaurant under a new concept. The transition will happen fairly quickly with the new owners opening for business in just a few weeks.

This hurts me deeply! My husband and I got engaged over a delicious caramel Flan a few years ago. We have loved the food, the atmosphere and the people of Solaris, and have made it a destination we cannot do without. I hope to hear in the coming months that Solaris has simply gone into hiatus, and makes a triumphant return to downtown Greensboro in another location. Good luck to all the employess!

It is honorably tough in the restuarant business to pull a profit , I wish the new owners the best and I hope their plan works out , I also wish the best for the previous owners too , its just tough out there. When people go from making something great to something not so great in salary range it effects all aspects of the lifestyle and of course how you spend your Friday and Saturday evenings................

I really hate that Solaris is shutting down. I think the atmosphere is great, and the food is exceptional. I enjoyed my visit to the restaurant. I am hoping that the Tapas idea carries on, because I absolutely love it. I wish you the best in your future adventures.

More reason to remember to support locally owned restaurants--downtown has quite a few--before spending your money at a national chain "restaurant-in-a-box." Who needs those corporate, cookie-cutter places when you can go to wonderful restaurants like Vintage 301, Undercurrent, Table16, Liberty Oak, Avenue, 223, Cafe Europa.....
