MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Greensboro got defensive touchdowns from Jerry Bates and Mykel Searcy to beat Maryville, 26-12 on Saturday in a USA South game.

The Pride (4-4, 2-3) held the Scots to 223 total yards.

"Our game ball has to go to our defense," said Pride coach Dr. Randy Hunt. "The conditions were tough for both offenses, but we made big plays and stifled their attack."

Greensoro freshman Antwan Thorpe scored the first quarter's only touchdown with 8:08 on the clock. Thorpe, who had 117 receiving yards on 10 catches, ran three yards for the TD.

Early in the second period, Jerry Bates intercepted a pass and returned it 55 yards for the score to make it 14-0.

Maryville (3-5, 2-3) responded with three straight scores.

The first was a team safety with 8:09 left in the half. Wesley Idlette then caught a 54-yard scoring pass from Tom Conner. Noboa then converted a 41-yard field goal with 3:32 before the break for a 14-12 lead.

Freshman quarterback Seth Adams led the Pride on a seven-play, 57-yard scoring drive. He connected with Thorpe on a 29-yard pass play with 1:10 remaining in the half for a 20-12 lead.

Making his second collegiate start, Adams was 14-for-23 for 136 yards. He had a touchdown pass and no interceptions.

Senior running back Matt Martin recorded his second straight 100-yard game with 118 yards on 22 carries.

There was one touchdown in the second half, and it was recorded by the GC defense. Deep in Scot territory, Searcy picked up a Maryville fumble and returned it eight yards for the score with 7:02 remaining in the third quarter.

Allen Stallings led the Pride with 10 tackles. Brian Richardson added six tackles, three sacks and four tackles for losses. Fellow senior defensive lineman Brandon Drumgoole had two tackles, a forced-fumble and a fumble recovery.

"We weren't as efficient on offense today, but the weather had a lot to do with that," Hunt said.
