APPALACHIAN STATE (5-2, 4-0 Southern)Who: Furman (4-3, 3-2) When: Noon today
Where: Paladin Stadium, Greenville, S.C. Radio: WBLO-790
Watch for: If the rain holds, look for another high-scoring game. Appalachian State piled up 713 yards of offense last week against Georgia Southern and leads all of FCS in total offense at 507 yards per game. Furman's defense is giving up 411 yards per game. Still, this one figures to be close. The Mountaineers have won a record four-straight and seven of the last eight games in the series but have never won back-to-back games in Greenville, S.C.
N.C. STATE (3-4, 0-3 ACC)
Who: Florida State (3-4, 1-3) When: Noon today
Where: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Fla.
TV: WXLV-45 Radio: WSJS-600, WKXR-1260
Watch for: N.C. State's secondary. The Wolfpack's Achilles heel has been inconsistent play by its defensive backs. Today the Pack will start its seventh different cornerback-safety combination in eight games because freshman CB Rashard Smith was lost to a knee injury -- just in time for a matchup against the ACC's leading passer: Florida State junior QB Christian Ponder.
GUILFORD (1-6, 0-3 odac)
Who: Randolph-Macon (5-2, 3-0) When: 1 p.m. today
Where: Herb Appenzeller Field at Armfield Athletic Center, Greensboro
Tickets: $5 adults, $4 visiting students, free for Guilford College students and children younger than 12
Webcast: www.guilford.edu/athletics/ondemand.html
Watch for: The Quakers' offense will be tested by Randolph-Macon's league-leading defense (307.6 ypg). Guilford QB Billy Watkins has completed 69 percent of his passes for 622 yards during the past two games with just one interception. RB Mike Williams has averaged 93 rushing yards in his last three games. LB Richie Paul, who ranks fifth in NCAA Division III in tackles per game, is Guilford's top defender. Randolph-Macon QB Austin Faulkner is a two-way threat who generates 175 total offensive yards per game. Earl Peoples (53 catches, 743 yards, 3 TD) is the ODAC's leading receiver.
ELON (6-1, 4-0 SOUTHERN)
Who: Wofford (2-5, 1-3) When: 1:30 p.m. today
Where: Gibbs Stadium, Spartanburg, S.C. Radio: WPCM-920
Watch for: WR Terrell Hudgins. He already holds the NCAA career record for catches and is 188 yards shy of Jerry Rice's all-time record for receiving yards. QB Scott Riddle leads No. 6 Elon's offense, which averages 306.9 passing yards per game. Wofford's run-oriented wingbone offense relies on misdirection and averages 274 rushing yards per game, the best among all FCS teams.
N.C. A&T (5-3, 3-2 MEAC)
Who: Bethune-Cookman (2-5, 1-3) When: 1:30 p.m. today
Where: Aggie Stadium, Greensboro Tickets: $15 general admission, $45 reserved seats Radio: WNAA-90.1
Watch for: Homecoming. A&T's seniors have never won a homecoming game, nor come close to a winning record. A victory today would secure both. Led by RBs Dontavious Payne and Mike Mayhew, the Aggies scored a season-high 30 points last week at Howard. If A&T scores early today, it could make things difficult for Bethune-Cookman's run-oriented, triple-option offense.
DUKE (4-3, 2-1 ACC)
Who: Virginia (3-4, 2-1) When: 3:30 p.m. today
Where: Scott Stadium, Charlottesville, Va.
Webcast: espn360.com Radio: WIST-98.3
Watch for: A landmark victory. At least, that's what Duke is shooting for as the Blue Devils haven't won five games in a season since the 1994 team went 8-4 (the last winning season in program history). Duke leads the ACC in passing offense, and QB Thad Lewis is averaging 396.3 passing yards in 3 ACC games. The winner of this game moves into second place in the Coastal Division.
WAKE FOREST (4-4, 2-2)
Who: Miami (5-2, 2-2) When: 3:30 p.m. today
Where: BB&T Field, Winston-Salem Tickets: $45 online at wakeforestsports.cstv.com or call 758-3322
TV: WXLV-45 Radio: WBRF-98.1, WZTK-101.1
Watch for: Quarterbacks. Miami sophomore Jacory Harris and Wake senior Riley Skinner rank third and fourth in the ACC in passing. The Demon Deacons have scored just 2 TDs in their last 10 quarters, but offense isn't really a concern down the stretch. Why? Wake's last four opponents rank 1-4 in the ACC in total offense, a big test for a Deacs defense ranked 10th out of 12.
