GRAHAM – The Whirlies kept their playoff hopes flickering by withholding a second-half rally and pounding the ball on the ground.
David Ray ran for 217 yards, Torian Patterson added 112 and wide receiver Dominique McNair filled in ably at quarterback with starter Kurt McPherson hurt and backup Lashawn Brown suspended.
“He didn’t do much but hand off, but he managed the game well and stepped up exactly when we needed him to,” Grimsley head coach Martin Samek said.
Grimsley led 20-7 at the half but allowed a quick touchdown, then fumbled on the Patriots 3 and watched a long return set up the tying score.
“We make some things interesting when they don’t have to be, I tell you,” Samek said.
Records: Grimsley 3-6, 3-2; Southern Alamance 1-8-1, 1-4.
