Pleasant Garden needs a change in leadership

Sunday, November 1, 2009
(Updated 2:00 am)

I have lived in Pleasant Garden for many years and have seen the changes in our community. Over the past few years, I have not been pleased with what I have seen. Now is a time for change.

I support Bill Greene because I believe that his successful track record as a business owner and past Lions Club president has demonstrated the leadership qualities and experience needed in our town. He is a man of character and honesty. Mr. Greene looks a person straight in the eye when he is speaking and explaining what he hopes to be able to do for the citizens of Pleasant Garden. He is aware that he cannot do it alone, and he has a clear conviction of finding a professional working relationship with all members of the council. Voters spoke loudly and clearly at the primary that they believe Bill Greene is the best candidate to be the next mayor of Pleasant Garden. I hope that you will also support him when you go to the polls on Tuesday

.

Oh, I do hope that the Citizens of Pleasant Garden vote Bill Greene into office. He is a good man, and we need him right now. I am so tired of the lies that are being thrown out there to our community, most recently the letter from Donald Jones, which was full of lies and half-truths about Mr. Marshall, and implications about Bill. That "We Love PG" crowd needs to wake up, or grow up. I understand that Gene Kimel, who is backing Carla Strickland, is a member of the "We Love" group. Please folks.....vote for Bill and Alan Marshall!!!!

If you are not interested in the historic event happening in Pleasant Garden then it is simple, just stop reading the letters, columns and this blog.

What were the lies in the letter?

Well said PGLady. It is sad the lengths that Anne’s side will go to. The lies and innuendos are appalling to many voting citizens of our town. Clearly the “We Love PG” group loves PG only if it benefits them and they have one of their own in office to manipulate the show. The closed door mentality highlighted with the chosen few holding meetings behind closed doors prior to council meetings tells a lot. It is clear that most things have been decided long before Town Council starts. If people want the truth then they should look at meeting agendas prior to Anne being mayor. The mayor sets the agenda and the very first one after she became mayor had changed the “invocation” to “moment of silence”. There was such an uproar at the meeting that it was returned to “invocation” and has remained that way. Yes it was put to a vote but that would not have been needed if Anne had not changed it to begin with. So no, she did not change it because the citizens of our town caught her at trying to and got it back to what it always should have been. As for the chairs for Veterans Day use, she says she was trying to support the Town Clerk who had said they could not be used but she is that person’s supervisor so she could have just told her early on to let the chairs be used. End of issue. She said no until she was going have to go to a public meeting and vote one way or the other so at the 11th hour she said the chairs could be used. What a gal! If you are not happy with the way your town is being run then please cast your vote for a change to an open minded, all inclusive Bill Greene.

Caring says: Clearly the “We Love PG” group loves PG only if it benefits them and they have one of their own in office to manipulate the show.

I consider myself to be in alignment with the message from We Love PG and if I can speak for them/us, We don't want anything but to be left alone. It's the Wyrick & Marshall crowd that's always whining that the Town is not doing enough. That the boards are not doing anything. If nothing needs to be done, then doing nothing is great.

It would suit me fine if the Town Council met every 2 months or once a quarter.

My fear is of the town doers getting in the majority (Wyrick, Marshall and Greene). Then the doing and spending will begin.

Alan stated during the debate that the part of the letter that said he wanted to grow town government. He also pointed out how Donald had cherry picked his statements to make it appear Alan was wanting to do something he was not. I guess you could call it lying by omission which Donald apparently did throughout the letter.

Donald Jones said in his letter that Alan Marshall presented the idea of having a 5 man police force to the Long Range Planning board.

This is accurate according to the minutes of the August and October minutes of 2007.

http://www.pleasantgarden.net/Long%20Range%20Planning/LRP10.16.07.pdf

According to the minutes Donald Jones was present at both meetings and was Vice Chairman of the Long Range Planning Board.

Donald Jones said that he couldn't imagine someone having such an idea unless they were searching for ways to grow government.

You and Mr. Jones left out the part that Alan was asked to research this options by the Long Range Planning Board on which he was serving. If you are going to tell it tell the whole story. So yes Alan presented the idea and its feasibility or should I say not, as part of his assignment from the Board not because he was promoting the idea.

Republican

He gave that assignment to himself in August and then in October he said he was asked to do it.

Alan Marshall would be the Barney Fife of Pleasant Garden.

If we ever had a police force he would do his best to be in charge of it. He would be having red alerts, updating the PG threat level to orange, doing snipe hunting drills in the middle of the night. Yep, the old Barn is always preparing.

In reading the minutes of the meetings seems to me like the Board asked him to research information on local crime and town options for protection.

It seems that way because in October he said he was asked to research it. But if you read the August minutes you will find he volunteered.

Honesty.

Every politician and his or her supporters say they are honest and have common sense. It’s true whether you are talking about POTUS, congress, state races, county, local and it is true of both our Mayoral candidates.

After watching many races I have learned to be suspicious of candidates that avoid talking specifics and to watch their actions past and present to gain insight to what you can really expect if they are elected.

Most of what I have heard from Bill Greene is nonsense talk about common sense, honesty and issues that are not really issues.

He wants to have prayer instead of a moment of silence before the meeting. We already have a prayer at meetings and the mayor & council voted 5-0 to keep it when the town attorney advised to go to a moment of silence 2 years ago.

He does not want to spend $15,000 on a book club. No one has ever proposed spending $15,000 on a book club.

He wants to have a balanced budget. We already have a balanced budget.

It would appear that he would say he is for the grass being green and the sky being blue if he though he could convince people that Anne Hice was against it.

They do differ on whether to put flags on the utility poles on holidays. Greene is for it, Hice said there were issues with getting permission from the utility companies.

The Question: If these so called issues that Greene is using as reasons to elect him are really just fluff, then what are the real issues? What does he really want to change?

Why are he and his allies so adamant that Pleasant Garden just can’t go on any longer without CHANGE?

Caring

Maybe a dose of honesty is what you need instead of what you say here. Bill Greene has more honesty that the people who make partial statements or take things out of context to make them appear very different than they are. Maybe you should ask the previous town attorney if he advised the council to stop having an invocation at the meetings. I believe you will find the answer is “no” that was not his advice.
I do not know what you are thinking but the $15,000.00 is there under the funding for the book club group. That is the project who Hice and her cronies voted into the budget with no plan or direction for the money. They just wanted it so they got it because they could. As a taxpayer it is not how I want my money spent and from the low numbers on a random survey I would venture a guess many do not either. Raiding our contingency fund while giving away money in this manner is a sign of poor stewardship.
We do have a balanced budget but not in a way that makes sense. Pet projects that do not need to be in the budget get funded while other items suffer and we raid our contingency fund. Makes no sense and again shows poor stewardship of tax dollars.
If everything Bill stands for is just “fluff” and he is so wrong why didn’t Anne show up for the debate today and straighten everyone out by pointing out all his faults?
The real issues are many and clearly the citizens of Pleasant Garden wanted a change as shown by the landslide at the primary. If Anne had integrity she would have honored the voice of the people and left the race at that point.
Any changes that come will be based on what is best for all the citizens of our town. Will the town go on? Well maybe it will but if things do not get better the town and its citizens will suffer. We have become the laughing stock of the county and many of us want that to change. We believe that Bill will make that happen. Anne has shown that not only can she not make that change but is the cause of the current status.
It is a sad state when you give the people of Pleasant Garden so little credit for being able to think for themselves. Tuesday is close at hand so we will see how it all pans out.

So... Mayor Hice has no integrity because she did not quit the race after the primary?

Book club group???? Reeeeaaaaalllllly?

Did you ever wonder why anyone would plan a debate 2 days before the election?

I don’t find it hard to believe that when the Town of Winston Salem was being sued over having a prayer before their meetings that Don Vaugn would advise that we would avoid potential liability by going to a moment of silence. But the minutes don’t say and I only have one side of the story to go on. I have heard only Anne, not Don. It appears you have spoken to neither one.

I don’t find it hard to believe that Anne Hice, who often seems to have town liability phobia to a fault, who is also a Quaker, would think that a moment of silence was acceptable.

She did change the agenda and I do agree she made a mistake. And while you say she is unwilling to listen to anyone she disagrees with, she clearly did listen.

So while we can agree that it should have never been removed from the agenda and she was in error, the point still stands that every Town Council meeting in the history of Pleasant Garden has had a prayer and there is no threat of it going away by will of the Council or Mayor regardless of who is elected.

Bill Greene is trying to give people the impression that prayer before the Town Council is in the balance of this election.

That is dishonest.

The $15,000 to which you refer is budgeted for library services at town hall in the event the Greensboro Public Library comes back with a proposal, as requested, for library services at the Town Hall that the Town Council agrees would be beneficial to the community. Such spending could only occur with the Town Council voting to enter a contract. Personally, I am skeptical of the need for library services in PG. However the point once again is Bill Greene lying about it when he knows full well no one has spent or is going to spend $15,000 on a book club.

Leadership.

From what I can tell the issue that started the conflict between the Lions Club and Anne Hice had to do with the Lions Club signs being removed from the state road sign poles on which they were hung by the Lions Club under the leadership of Bill Greene, then president of the Lions Club.

The Lions were so mad that they set out on a “misery loves company” mission to get other people’s illegal signs pulled down too. They quickly found that they were a minority in having chosen to hang their signs on state owned sign posts in PG, so they expanded their search to include signs that were on the property of the sign’s owner but also in the state road right of way. With a list of these right of way violators they attempted to have the State remove privately owned signs that were on the property of their owners.

I don’t appreciate the PG Lions Club under the leadership of Bill Greene behaving in this manner.

The PG Lions Club stated mission is: “To create and foster a spirit of understanding among all people for humanitarian needs by providing voluntary services through community involvement and international cooperation.”

It would seem that under the leadership of Bill Greene they have failed to follow their mission. They are not an organization promoting a spirit understanding, they have become a political organization.

The mission of incorporating the Town of Pleasant Garden was to preserve Pleasant Garden and stop the threat of annexation by Greenbsoro.

Anne Hice has kept us on mission.

Bill Greene says we are in need of a change. Keep the change Bill.

Leadership indeed. If there was an issue is calling the officials rather than the civic origination that gives so much to this town a good role model? All that had to be done was contact the Lions Club and have a discussion. It does not go without notice that all the other signs attached to these poles have not been reported or removed. One would ask why the law was only being applied to the Lions Club rather than everyone. Does Anne have something personal against the Club? As mayor shouldn’t she want to ensure that the laws were applied equally across the board? Should she not have readily dealt with all other property owners or signs? Even today many of the signs in our town are in violation of the law but no one sees Anne doing anything about that now do we? You may not appreciate the leadership Bill has shown but a whole lot of people in this town do. Less and less people appreciate the leadership or lack thereof shown by our current mayor.
So you think that Bill and the Lions Club failed in there mission because they expected equal treatment for everyone? Isn’t that part of our rights in America? Or do those only apply to Anne’s chosen people? The Lions Club has not become a political organization but is being used as a political football for Anne to kick around.
As for “Keep the change Bill”. Since Anne’s daughter is so proud of her taking out the trash, I would like to suggest that any change in his pocket be used to buy Anne trash bags that she can use at her next job so she will have something to do.
We are sorely in need of a change in leadership. We need someone in office that can be respected, held accountable and a role model for all. That person is Bill Greene.

I agree that the law should be enforced uniformly to everyone.

However you can’t equivocate someone putting a sign on their own property in the right of way with someone putting their sign on someone else’s property on a State owned structure. If there are others with signs on State structures, like the Lions Club was dumb enough to do, then I agree they should get the same treatment the Lions Club got.

You imply that the Mayor has the authority to decide which signs are removed by the State. The Mayor’s suggestion may carry some influence, but it’s up to the State of NC to enforce the state law, not the Mayor.
