The tradition of decorating Pleasant Garden Road with American flags on national holidays became a hot-button issue and, over time, increasingly complex.
Many flags were too close to the road and were swiped by semis. Others were abused by storms. The majority of the council agreed that erecting patriotic banners on recently installed brackets would be an economical, attractive addition and save manpower.
But, enter Murphy’s Law. The banners ordered did not fit the brackets and were returned for a full refund.
Upon investigation, previously hung Christmas banners were too large to comply with Duke Energy regulations.
AT&T stated it wouldn’t allow anything attached to their poles — all of those on the west side of Pleasant Garden Road.
The town’s process to find locations for Duke Energy-approved poles to erect flags was abandoned when a civic club and council members moved to delay the decision for a month, during which time the local civic club planted 50 flags on Pleasant Garden Road.
This is an excellent way to relate Mayor Anne Hice’s patriotism and penchant for details, some say to a fault, and adherence to rules and laws. Her strong values are why she has my respect and vote.
