Cats nip all of man's $1.7 million estate

RALEIGH (AP) — A Raleigh man has left his nearly $1.7 million estate to four North Carolina cat charities.

WRAL-TV reported today that Emil Campbell died suddenly last month and left instructions for his lawyer to bequeath his entire estate to cats.

Attorney Bobby Khot says Campbell left the money to four charities: Snowflake Animal Rescue, Marley's Cat Tales, SAFE Haven for Cats and Second Chance Pet Adoptions.

A spokeswoman for Snowflake Animal Rescue says her organization typically gets less than $6,000 a year in donations. She says she had to read the letter about Campbell's donation twice before she believed it.

Khot says his client didn't work at a high paying job but was very frugal and saved money. He says Campbell had one surviving daughter.

I must admit I am not much of a cat lover... but with all of the food banks needing support, this is rather appalling.

I adopted my FIV-positive (Feline AIDS) cat from Marley's Cat Tails. They are a great organization that takes special needs animals from all along the east coast. This is great for them (and the other organizations). In these economic times, these organizations need funds. They are usually overcrowded but during times of economic stress, they are more so.

@ Whyus - there are no churches, food banks or welfare agencies for animals - only these types of organizations.

As an animal lover and a cat lover, I find this story a wonderful piece of news. The man had a great heart.

I'm an animal lover, I've owned pets my entire life. It is great that he donated money, but why ALL? Considering all the dying and starving children in our nation. I just don't know what else to say. Speechless.

This man saved his money and he should be able to leave it to ever he wishes. People and food banks get money from the goverment and private donations. Animals do not. If you are worried about the homelss beggers on every st. corner in Greensboro than give some of your pay to them. The animals are not out there begging, they NEED our help. God Bless that man and his money to help the shelters who help the animals.

I agree with you nhalleycat, when money is donated to charities by the time the fat cats (er) dogs get their share how much do the charities really get?
