RALEIGH — The N.C. Attorney General's office is investigating a scam in which a fake state agency mails false prize notices to unsuspecting residents.
According to the Attorney General's Office, state residents have been receiving a mailing from the Commissioners of Registration that promises a prize if the recipient fills out a form and returns it with a $20 payment.
The mailings look official and include a fake state seal. But the Commissioners of Registration is not a state agency, and the attorney general's office said there is no prize.
State law prohibits people from having to pay a fee to win a prize.
State residents who have responded to this scam can call for help at (877) 566-7226. More information about prize scams is online at www.ncdoj.gov.
