RALEIGH — Gov. Bevy Perdue has signed an emergency declaration to help with cleanup from a rock slide which has blocked traffic on Interstate 40 near the Tennessee border.
Perdue signed the declaration on Wednesday. It's the first step in seeking federal funds to help clear debris and repair the road, as it enables the state Department of Transportation to request funding assistance from the Federal Highway Administration.
The governor and other state officials toured the site on Wednesday.
The rock slide occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday. Initial damage assessments from state transportation officials estimate the cleanup and repair will cost up to $9 million and take at least three months to complete.
