Insurer says timing of mailings unfortunate

RALEIGH (AP) — Even Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina acknowledges that its timing on two recent mailings was unfortunate.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported that customers first learned their rates will rise by an average of 11 percent next year.

Then they got a flier urging them to send an enclosed preprinted, postage-paid note to Sen. Kay Hagan denouncing what the company says is unfair competition that would be imposed by a government-backed insurance plan. Congress is likely to consider that public option as it debates the health care overhaul.

"No matter what you call it, if the federal government intervenes in the private health insurance market, it's a slippery slope to a single-payer system," the BCBS flier read. "Who wants that?"

Indignant Blue Cross customers, complaining that their premium dollars are funding the campaign, have called Hagan's office to voice support for a public option. They've marked through the Blue Cross message on their postcards and changed it to show they support the public option, then mailed the cards.

"I hope it backfires," said Mark Barroso, a documentary film maker in Chatham County who is a Blue Cross customer and recipient of the mailings. "I'm doing everything I can to make sure it does."

Beth Silberman of Durham said she "went sort of bonkers" about the mailing.

"You're hostage to them, and then they pull this," she said. "My new premiums are funding lobbying against competition. It's pretty disgusting."

A spokesman in Hagan's office, David Hoffman, said the postcards have not yet begun arriving in the senator's office because of the mail screening process, but he said lots of people have called, angry about the insurer's tactics.

Blue Cross spokesman Lew Borman said the mailing relied on voter registration records, not a customer list. Because the company controls more than half of the state's health insurance market, the names on the lists overlapped.

He declined to reveal how much money the insurer paid for the mailing.

He acknowledged the timing was unfortunate but said it was coincidental since one mailing was tied to current events in Washington and the other to when the insurer typically sends its annual notices about rate increases.

"We said from the beginning we were going to be involved and would tell North Carolinians what kind of impact the health care proposals would have, and that's what we've been doing," Borman said.

Gee, I wonder where the News and Fishwrap stands on this issue? Hard to tell with this puff piece

It's an Associated Press article - it wasn't written by the News & Record, and it's reporting that people are angry with their insurance companies. Although that's not "news" to me, it is relevant.

Thank God people are starting to see that these insurance companies are out of control. I saw the cost comparison between private insurance and the public plan, which is only available to people who do not have insurance, and I am in FULL support of health care reform with the public option. I would prefer not to have the opt-out provision as well. Republicans are just trying to stall when they know we, the people, need real reforms. Selling across state lines would just make these companies larger. BCBS is in almost all of the 50 states. I live in Greensboro, NC, but I did not have BCBSNC. I had Empire BCBS of NJ which filed their claims through BCBSNC, which would render selling across state lines useless and just increase BCBS power and influence. Tort reform is needed, but not to the point where someone with a botched surgery only gets $250,000. That might not even cover the medical bills they have. That doesn't even supplement the future earnings that person may not be able to have anymore. I just think Republicans need to stop trying to say no to everything, and say yes to something because the constituents they have on their side do not have that many years left and they will be voted out as soon as that time passes.

What an ignorant statement. The democrats are working behind closed doors on this government take over of healthcare. REPUBLICANS ARE NOT INVITED. The Republicans can't stop or stall anything. It is Pelosi and Reid who are having problems getting their own party members to agree to this piece of crap bill.
To set the record straight, insurance companies are all for competition. They want to be able to compete across state lines, all across the country. And what is wrong with companies getting larger? If you had a company, wouldn't you want it to grow? Doesn't a larger company employ more people? With the government take over of healthcare, the only insurance that would be allowed to compete all over the country would be the government plan. Now how is that fair to insurance compaines? The government doesn't want competition, they want complete take over.
Your comment "I just think Republicans need to stop trying to say no to everything". Again this is a stupid statement. So what if the Republicans say no to everything? They don't have enough votes to make it count.
What about the democrats saying NO to everything the Republicans suggest. EVERYTHING the Republicans proposed was dead on arrival, because of the democrats partisan politics. Harry Reid talks about wanting to work with Republicans. HE IS A LIER. His idea of "working together with Republicans is the GOP must agree to everything the democrats want and Republicans are not allowed to propose anything. He is NOT interested in working with any Republican.
By the way, I wouldn't worry too much about the Republicans being voted out any time soon. Have you seen Nancy Pelosi's and Harry Reid's poll number lately?

Nothing would be wrong with it if these companies that are already too large are committing abuses. They do not cover cancer survivors or charge them so much they can not afford to have coverage. They cause small businesses not to offer health insurance for their employees by raising premiums year after year. They come up with crazy reasons not to cover women that are bused or women who have c-sections. Do I need to go on? We are the only country that talks about health care as an industry instead of a necessity for the people. We separate public health and health care like they are not the same thing. Sorry, but Republicans have not come to the table and have not tried to be a part of the process. Tort reform is not acceptable, and selling across state lines isn't either because they already do that. BCBSNC, BCBSSC, Empire BCBS.... All forms of the same company across state lines. Come with real reforms and help people and I will gladly side with the insurance companies and Republicans, but until then I will continue to support anyone who is willing to stand for the people and not these large corporations. As far as the Democrats who are also stalling they are included in people I would love to be able to vote out. You are the ignorant one because you choose to ignore facts and go with the endless lies and exaggerations of the Republicans and the insurance companies.

Also, the public option or whatever they choose to name it will only be available to the uninsured, not you. If you like your insurance keep it. I just hope you do not fall into any of the gaps insurance companies are waiting for you to fall in. Then your perception would change.

You are either lying or you are just plain ignorant.
You said "Sorry, but Republicans have not come to the table and have not tried to be a part of the process. "
Look up The Patients Choice Act of 2009. This is the Republican plan, which the democRATs did not even consider a single proposal from this plan. And you want to try to convience people on this thread that democRATs want to work with Republicans? How many Republicans were behind the closed doors with the democRATs, as they are putting together this plan? ZERO, that's how many. Is it any wonder why none of the Republicans will vote for this partisan plan? They will not even be able to see the democRAT plan until about 2 days before they will be asked to vote on it. And why is that "Tort reform is not acceptable"? Just because you say so? Just because it is a republican Idea? Just because democRATs receive MILLIONS of $$$$ from trial lawyers? And you are simply WRONG, insurance companies CANNOT sell across ALL state lines. But the government will be able to in it's complete take over of this nations healthcare. If you want true competition, insurance companies should be able to do the same. But competition is not the goal, Socialized Medicine is the goal of the democRATs.
In no way did I say healthcare didn't need reform. But the partisan democRAT plan is looking disaster straight in the face. Socialized medicine does not work. It has been tried and it has failed.
You also say "the public option or whatever they choose to name it will only be available to the uninsured" I'd be more than willing to take that bet. Once my insurance company gets out of the healthcare insurance business, due to the unfair competition of the government, the democRAT plan says I will be FORCED to go on the government plan. My choice will be taken away. That is not an exaggeration, that is how the plan is set up. And why is it that under the democRATs healthcare plan, 17 million people will still be uninsured? That's because democRATs are not interested in people's healthcare, they only care about having total control the 1/6th of this nation's economy.
To sum it up, YOU ARE SIMPLY WRONG.

The last time I checked the Dems have a majority and it does not matter how the Republicans vote. So it is not the Republicans fault. And who wants the government running anything. I agree there needs to be some kind of reform but the public(Goverment) Option is NOT the answer.

Except for the bit where about 30% of the country already has some form of public health care. Like Medicare, or Medicaid, or VA benefits, or one of the other forms of government-supplied health care, which our tax dollars are paying for. As a taxpayer, I would love to get the same health care benefits my taxes are providing to Richard Burr and all the other congressional Republicans maintaining the status quo and keeping your costs high so that BCBSNC can be highly profitable.

"I would love to get the same health care benefits my taxes are providing to Richard Burr "

I would too. But the democRAT socialized healthcare plan doesn't require congress to have the same plan that we normal everyday citizens will be forced to accept. If you don't think that's fair, then call your democRAT congress and tell them not to force this on us. I'm sure Richarrd Burr already has plans to vote against it.

"We said from the beginning we were going to be involved and would tell North Carolinians what kind of impact the health care proposals would have, and that's what we've been doing," Borman said. You know that's not true... Tell use what the CEO made for 2008 and so far this year. Maybe if you tell us the truth we would be more apt to go along with your position, then again it might hurt your position and that is why you want tell.

Hmmmm...sounds like some of those changes we can believe in.
I hope Sen. Hagan can see the trees thru the forest.

If you want government run health care, lets get them to get the VA right first, before we let them take over all health care
