Elon election preview

The three candidates vying for the two open seats on Elon’s Board of Aldermen said they want to help guide the town through the economic recession.

“I would like to help make the decisions that would allow the town to operate within its means,” said Stephen Buff, who will be on the ballot with incumbents Jo Grimley and Davis Montgomery.

Grimley and Montgomery said they’re also focused on continuing the work on the town’s new library. The board has hired an architect to begin design work on the building, which will be built at Beth Schmidt Park. Buff said he disagreed with the board’s decision to build the library there instead of at the ball field.

Montgomery said he brings diverse business and personal experiences to the board and wants to continue shaping Elon’s future. “All around us things are changing, and we have to strike a balance between preserving what is good about our town and making changes that will keep Elon a place where people will want to live, go to school, shop, eat out and raise their families,” he said.

Grimley said she cares deeply about Elon. “I have lived in Elon for more than half of my life,” she said. “Citizens have felt comfortable contacting me about issues that concern them.”

Buff said he is fiscally conservative and has project management experience and the time to do the job right. “I want to help my town make well-thought-out, logical, cost-effective decisions that are in the best interest of the entire town,” he said.
