WINSTON-SALEM — A report of someone seen armed with a rifle running behind a female at Wiley Middle School this morning, which prompted a lockdown, turned out to be a false alarm.
About 10:34 a.m., Winston-Salem police officers responded to a report of someone armed running behind a female near the school's Reynolds Gymnasium.
School officials placed surrounding schools on lockdown.
It turned out, however, that members of the JROTC program from Reynolds High School had transported an inoperable weapon to the gymnasium when they were spotted by a concerned citizen, according to police.
