RALEIGH (AP) — An agreement will protect nearly 1,500 acres in the North Carolina mountains from development, including part of a trail used in the Revolutionary War.
The Conservation Trust for North Carolina said Monday that the agreement by the state involves land owned by CSX Corp. in McDowell County.
The agreement protects the land from development and logging. CSX will continue to own the land, operate the rail line and pay property taxes.
The tract includes land along a four-mile stretch on the Blue Ridge Parkway. It also includes 1.5 miles of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail, which was used by mountain militiamen on their way to the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina in 1780.
The agreement allows improvements so the public can hike part of the trail.
