GREENSBORO -- Tunde Ogun ran for 124 yards and a touchdown as Christopher Newport spoiled Greensboro College's homecoming with a 14-7 victory at Jamieson Stadium.
Antonio Epps' 4-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter was the winning score for the Captains (4-3, 3-1 USA South), who have never lost to the Pride in 10 meetings.
Freshmen Seth Adams and Antwan Thorpe excelled on offense for the Pride (3-4, 1-3). Thorpe had 115 yards on six catches, and Adams was 15-of-33 for 231 yards and one touchdown. But the one interception Adams threw led to CNU's winning drive.
"Sure, we fought hard and played them better than ever, but we left too many points on the board," said Pride coach Dr. Randy Hunt. "We had three chances inside the 20-yard line and came away with no points."
Two of those scoring chances came in the second quarter. On one drive, GC turned the ball over on downs after Thorpe's toe-tap in the end zone was ruled out of bounds. On its next series, Georg Wolff missed a field goal.
The Pride lost despite outgaining CNU 381-292 and producing 21 first downs to 15 for the Captains. Matt Martin led GC's rushing effort with 110 yards on 21 carries.
