Town neighbor comments about "illegal" closed sessions

In what started out as an uneventful Stokesdale Town Council meeting, Summerfield resident Gail Dunham addressed her neighboring town’s council about alleged illegal closed session meetings in her town.

Dunham told the council the town’s attorney, William B. Trevorrow, sat through and allowed illegal closed session meetings when he was the attorney for the town of Summerfield.

She presented recently unsealed closed-session minutes to the Stokesdale town clerk for the town’s records. At one point during her comments, Dunham began directing her questions directly to Trevorrow.

“Ma’am, this is Stokesdale,” Mayor Randle L. Jones said. “If you want to talk to Mr. Trevorrow about Summerfield, you’ll have to make an appointment with his office.”

Also in the Oct. 15 meeting, the council:

• Voted unanimously to use contingency funding to seed the soccer fields in the new town park with perennial rye grass until the permanent Bermuda grass seeds can be planted properly.

The window of time to plant the Bermuda grass has already passed. For the seeds to take root, they need to be planted between June 1 and Aug. 1.

In a letter from park contractors R.P. Murray, it was explained that the rye grass would have to be planted so the field will be ready for play by spring.

Contingency funds will be used because the grass will be killed so that the Bermuda grass can be planted properly.

The contractors explained that the Bermuda grass will stand up to the use of an athletics field.

• Voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to regulate the speed limit on U.S. 158 from a point on N.C. 68 to Angel-Pardue Road to 25 miles per hour from a half hour before school starts to a half hour after school ends on school days.
