KERNERSVILLE - After being bottled up most of the second half, Glenn running back Josh Hawkins broke free and scored the winning touchdown on a 50-yard run right up the middle to give the Bobcats a 14-7 victory over High Point Central on Friday night.
Hawkins' run came with 6 minutes to play and the defense did the rest to preserve the win. Hawkins finished with 174 yards rushing for the game.
"Coach just kept telling me to keep pushing," Hawkins said. "I just had to keep moving my feet. They did a good job of blocking."
Glenn coach Dickie Cline said his team did what it wanted to for the most part, but missed some opportunities. He was happy to get the victory any way they can.
"We're not a flashy team," Cline said. "Our style is to control the ball and control the clock. In the first half we did that, we just didn't finish. We're not going to gamble until we have to."
Although it was the Glenn offense that came up with the big play late, the defense is what kept the Bobcats in the game. With High Point driving late in the fourth quarter, the Bison had a fourth-and-less than a yard. The Bobcats defense stopped them just short and Hawkins' heroics took place in Glenn's next play after the turnover on downs.
"We felt they (the defense) had a great week of practice," Cline said. "They just did a fantastic job."
The victory allowed the Bobcats (8-1, 4-0) to stay undefeated in the Piedmont Triad 4-A conference and set up a first-place showdown with Ragsdale next Friday in Jamestown.
"It's an exciting time for our kids," said Cline, who was an assistant coach at Ragsdale for several years. "I've never been on the visitors' sideline there. We'll have to keep their offense off the field and protect the ball."
The loss was hard to swallow for Central (7-2, 3-1) coach Wayne Jones. His team's defense also played well expect for Hawkins' game-winning run.
"On that play we had a blitz called," Jones said. "We just took ourselves right out of the play. But you have to give them credit for making that call."
It was a fast first half, with Glenn controlling the ball and keeping it on the ground with Hawkins for most of the time. The Bobcats moved methodically up and down the field, but missed some opportunities because of sacks and a turnover.
Glenn finally got on the board late in the second quarter. A nine-play drive, all on the ground, ended with Khiry Sutton going right up the middle for a 12-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 6:00 minutes to play.
After barely moving the ball for most of the first half, High Point Central was able to bust loose to bounce back. The big play was an option that quarterback Drew Adams kept, went right, cut back all the way across the field and picked up 45 yards. Al-daquan Teasley finished off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown run, tying the game with 1:29 to play in the half.
