EDEN — A detective investigating a rape was attacked by the teenage suspect , Eden police said.

Officers arrested 17-year-old Christopher Burston, 1106 Irving Ave., on Tuesday. A woman on Sunday reported that her 12-year-old daughter was sexually active with a 17-year-old male, who police later identified as Burston.

Det. David Lamberth searched Burston during the arrest and seized a cell phone as evidence. Lamberth put the cell phone aside and continued his search. Police say Burston’s mother, Brandie Jumper, grabbed the phone and refused to give it back to Lamberth. Jumper jerked away as Lamberth tried to arrest her, and a struggled ensued, police said. Burston jumped on Lamberth’s back and twice punched him in the back of his head.

A second officer was eventually able to bring Burston under control and handcuff him. Jumper was handcuffed after an officer used a Taser on her in the drive-stun mode. Lamberth suffered minor injuries.

Jumper was charged with resisting and obstructing a public officer and is free on a $1,500 unsecured bond. Burston was charged with first-degree rape, assault on a government official and he also had an outstanding warrant for trespassing. He is being held in the Rockingham County jail under a $500,000 bond. Both mom and son have Oct. 28 court dates.
