State fair attendance up 9 percent

RALEIGH (AP) — N.C. State Fair officials say attendance is up this year despite cooler temperatures and swine flu fears.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported today that as of Sunday, 274,480 people have attended the fair, an increase of 9 percent over last year.

Officials say some of the increase could be attributed to a new counting method. This year, a bar-code system counts attendance for livestock exhibitors and media members who receive free admission. Officials say some of those people would not have been counted in years past.

Attendance is expected to increase with improving weather.

The fair has posted signs warning sick visitors to stay away and urging healthy visitors to wash their hands before and after petting livestock in an effort to combat swine flu.
