GIBSONVILLE — A mobile home outside town limits will get town water and sewer service because of an error by town staff.
A building permit by Todd E. Tickle for a mobile home at 720 Piedmont Ave. was approved in August and indicated that the mobile home would be permitted to hook up to Gibsonville sewer services if the town annexed the property.
Tickle built the home, but during the annexation petition process, the town realized its mistake. Town ordinances allow for water and sewer services for mobile home parks, but not an individual mobile home.
“It was definitely an honest mistake,” Town Manager Ben Baxley said.
The mayor called a special meeting Oct. 12 to address the problem. At the brief meeting, the Board of Aldermen passed a resolution allowing the connection to the mobile home. The document states that “the resolution is meant to prevent undue hardship due to an honest mistake.”
The town made a special exception because of its error and is not trying to set a precedent, Baxley said. “(Tickle) was relying on that information,” Baxley said. “We’d already signed off on it.”
Tickle dropped his petition for annexation Thursday, so he will not pay town taxes. Water and sewer are the only services he will receive from the town, Baxley said.
Tickle paid double the water and sewer connection fees for homes annexed by the town.
