Leonard Pitts Jr.: Why? Oh, why would NFL reject Limbaugh?

Wednesday, October 21, 2009
(Updated 3:00 am)

We are gathered here today in sympathy with our brother, Rush Limbaugh.

As you are no doubt aware, these have been difficult days for Brother Limbaugh. There he was, happily revealing that he was part of an investment group that had submitted a bid to purchase the St. Louis Rams of the National Football League. Next thing you know, Al Sharpton is on him like ugly on King Kong, urging the NFL to reject him. And NFL players, not previously known for commenting on or even visibly caring, who owns a team so long as the paychecks clear, are saying they would not play for him. And owners, who must vote to approve him, are telling reporters they will not.

It all came to a head last week as the talk show host was dumped by his fellow investors. Whose heart is so stony that it does not weep for Brother Limbaugh to find himself humiliated so? Put yourself in his shoes.

You're a college dropout and OxyContin junkie who somehow managed to climb to the top of the media pile. You've made yourself one of the most popular and influential voices in the national dialogue and that, in turn, has made you rich beyond dreams of avarice. How satisfying must that be.

And you're an avid sports fan, too, so naturally you jump at a chance to fulfill every sports fan's dream -- to buy yourself a team. You picture yourself watching games from the luxury box with a babe or two on your arm, evaluating talent and signing off on trades, partying in the locker room, champagne stinging your eyes, at the end of a championship game.

How cruel to have it all snatched away from you. And why? Because a bunch of black African American Negroes start making noise? What reason do they have to be upset with you?

Just because you once called Philadelphia Eagles star Donovan McNabb overrated, the victim of media too eager to see a black quarterback do well?

Just because you referred to Barack Obama and Halle Berry as "Halfrican Americans?"

Just because you told your listeners Obama's economic program is "reparations?"

Just because you called Obama "the little black man-child?"

Just because you said the NFL "all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips?"

Just because you once told a black caller to "take that bone out of your nose and call me back?"

For those "trifles" the sensitive pansies of the NFL don't want to have anything to do with you? Why do they even care? Just because 65 percent of their players are black African American Negroes? Oh, the shame! Oh, the humanity!

So yes, the rest of us should rally around Brother Limbaugh. If they can deny one rich, racially inflammatory media lout his constitutional right to own a football team, what's to stop them from denying another? This is a clear and present danger. Pat Buchanan, Glenn Beck ... none of us is safe while this injustice stands.

And besides, what lesson does this teach our children?

That there are things (like respectability) even money can't buy? That there are doors (like the one to the owner's box) even fame can't open? That you only have one reputation and it's not stain-resistant, so you'd better not soil it? That karma is a female dog?

Do you really want your children to learn that sort of socialist claptrap? I don't. How dare the high and mighty NFL act like the things we say carry consequences?

So let's stand up for Brother Limbaugh. Indeed, here and now, I am starting a legal fund to help him carry on the fight. I will make the first contribution -- a shiny new Franklin Roosevelt dime. What about you? Wouldn't you like to see poor Rush get what he deserves?

Please give generously.

"Just because 65 percent of their players are black African American Negroes?"

I see this line in just about every commentary on this subject. The funny thing is that number correlates with the number of black children that are born into single family homes and yet I seldom if EVER see articles written by the "black" commentators concerning the issue. I know you and your buddies love busting on Rush, his weight, his drug addiction, etc. Funny thing is he has lost 85 pounds since March and a few years ago publicly admitted and got treatment for his drug addiction. I also know it is vogue among black commentators to spew this "faux" anger at Rush because it makes you "look" principled. I suggest you stop worrying about people like Rush Limbaugh and start worrying about people that really impact your black brethren so negatively like the race pimps Jackson and Sharpton. As long as they keep telling Cosby to shut up and keep telling black people that welfare and fatherless homes are just fine; then black people will always have much bigger problems than Rush.

BTW, I realize white people have many of the same issues and they are just as wrong if they do them. However, white people don't blame their problems on black people and scream racism every time the they screw up.

I look forward to your column addressing fatherless homes in the black community Leonard. I will not be holding my breath until you write it though.

(Zeus, I already know what you are going to say so you don't need to waste your time and have a nice day, LOL!)

Rush is getting exactly what he deserves - a very public come-uppance for his repeated public disrespect. One can hardly blame his black counterparts for relishing the irony of the situation. That being said, I will channel my parents when I say "Two wrongs do not make a right."

BTW, who is spewing "faux" anger? My guess is Pitts anger is real; yours, on the other hand, does not sound genuine. And Rush is as big a problem as Jackson and Sharpton; he tells 80% of the US (FYI - the white population) that it is okay to be racist every time he makes one of his ignorant comments.

As to your last two comments, who are you to tell people what to write/say or not write/say? Anyone who knows who Rush is should be well aware of the principle of Free Speech.

"take that bone out of your nose and call me back?"

What Rush is getting is higher rating every day his name in the news. I am not defending Rush. He hardly needs it. The point of my post is that the black community has much bigger problems than Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck. I don't have any "faux" anger. I am not angry at all, I am sad that the black community continues to deflect and project their significant issues to other people. In particular, white conservatives on the radio and TV. My whole point is that they would be well served to look at themselves, solve the problems of familial unit breakdown and stop worrying about Rush.

So black columnists should not address any issues other than the breakdown of the family? I'm sorry, but I have to disagree. By that reasoning, what should white female columnists focus on? Hispanic females? Hispanic males? Asians? And aren't there bigger issues for a white male to be concerned with than what a black columnist is writing? Shouldn't you be looking at yourself and solving ____?

I never said that is the ONLY subject they should write about. I said they should write about it at least once and more often than they write about Rush. Stop responding to what I am not saying.

"And aren't there bigger issues for a white male to be concerned with than what a black columnist is writing?"

Not when white males are consistently blamed for the problems in the black community. I tell you what, when black people stop blaming white people, white men in particular, for their problems then I will find something else to be concerned with.

Columnists should write about what they are interested in. Readers should read about what they are interested in. Mr. Pitts isn't telling you that you should read his column; you have no business telling him what to write in it.

As to your response to issues concerning white males, perhaps that is the reasoning behind Mr. Pitts' column - it is an issue he is concerned about. (Look back to the column - a white male calling a high-achieving, well-educated black man a child; a white man calling black athletes gang members; a white man saying it isn't possible for a black man to be a successful quarterback without the help of the media giving him false praise. Perhaps a white commentator's need to regularly disparage black male role models is precisely why this column was written.)

Well Pitts and the N&R are spewing their hate bias again. I would like to refer to those who want to know the truth go to www.Townhall.com/columists/ThomasSowell/to_sue_or_not

Leonard Pitts is my favorite columnist. Why shouldn't he point out what white racists say? That the NFL would reject Limbaugh as an owner raises my estimation of that organization. I'm glad to hear about it.

Perhaps he should bring up what the black racist think. White Soda Cracker is still alive and well in Greensboro.
