Jamestown approves annexation

(Updated 11:36 pm)

Jamestown Town Council unanimously approved annexing property formerly at 6020 High Point Road Tuesday night, now split into three properties with addresses on Gardner Hill Drive, which runs through the property.

Developer Stratton Development requested the voluntary annexation earlier this year. The properties — at Guilford College and High Point roads, a short distance from the Ragsdale YMCA — will include a Sheetz gas station and retail stores.

In August, Planning Director Matthew Johnson said the property is named for a gold and copper mine formerly operated in the area.

In other business, the council:

• Heard resident Yvonne Thomas request the council to place street lamps throughout every neighborhood in town, something the town once did but stopped in years past. Thomas lives in the Parkwood Development.

• Received the 2008-09 annual audit from John Frank of the firm Dixon Hughes.

• Heard updates from Mo Green, Guilford County Schools’ superintendent; Terry Worrell, schools’ regional superintendent; Linda Holden, Millis Road Elementary curriculum facilitator; Kim Fleming, Jamestown Elementary principal; and Denise Richmond, Jamestown Middle School principal.

• Heard two formal complaints filed through the town’s nuisance abatement ordinance. Johnson said complaints had been received on properties at 214 Oakdale Road and 204 Newberry St.

The council made a motion to order the owner of the water tower at 214 Oakdale Road to remove it and made a motion giving the owner at 204 Newberry St. two weeks to clean up her property if debris is found collecting in the yard again. After two weeks, a $500 per day penalty will be accessed.

• Set a public hearing date of 7 p.m. Nov. 17 to hear a rezoning request for property at 300-399 Lee Street.

The property owner wants to rezone the property from single family residential to conditional zoning single family cluster development. This means homes will be built in close proximity to each other, leaving at least 40 percent of the property as permanent open space.

• Passed a resolution of intent to close an existing street and abandon right-of-way for Heritage Drive, located off of Jefferson Park Drive. A public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Nov. 17.

• Approved a sewer agreement with Guilford County Schools for the Jamestown Middle School property.

• Waived the town services fee for the Rotary of Jamestown's Dec. 6 parade and the 60 day filing period for the Jamestown United Methodist Church's annual pumpkin run.

• Appointed Eddie Oakley to the planning board to fill the unexpired term of Peggy Corey and appointed Lynn Montgomery as a planning board alternate member. Oakley's term expires August 2011.

• Passed a resolution recognizing the town's celebration of Arbor Day this year.
