MAYODAN — A Rockingham County deputy used a Taser to subdue a McMichael High School student who became disruptive during football practice Monday.

The Rockingham County Sheriff's Office said a 17-year-old student started cursing and making loud comments about 3:45 p.m. Monday as the football team was watching a training film. The coach ordered the student to leave, but the student refused.

Principal Roger Whitley could not get the student to leave, so he called 911.

Cpl. Frank Martin, a sheriff's deputy, tried to lead the student from the class, but the student became combative, the sheriff's office said. When the student called out for others to help him, Martin used the Taser to subdue the student.

The student was unhurt. A subsequent search turned up two plastic bags of marijuana. The sheriff's office did not say how much marijuana was in the bags.

The student, Joshua Obrien Hayes of 178 Gibson Road in Madison, was was charged with possession with intent to sell/deliver marijuana, disorderly conduct, second-degree trespass and resisting a public officer. His bond was set at $21,000.
