COROLLA (AP) — State officials and environmentalists are nearing a deal to build a 5-mile bridge to link an isolated island on the Outer Banks with the mainland.

The Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk reported today that the toll bridge would stretch over the Currituck Sound to Corrolla, known for its lighthouse and wild horses. The bridge is expected to generate $7 million in its first year.

An environmental impact statement is expected by the end of the year. Construction is scheduled to begin in February and be finished in 2013.

There is absolutely nothing isolated about this little community, main road connects to Nags Head. It's just the influence game being played of the high profile property owners in that region. When are we going to spend money wisely? There are more masses of people on the lower Outer Banks that need better routing...not just the rich guys coming from the north...

Can someone please point out exactly what was newsworthy about this article? There was no reporting of the expense to build the bridge, no reporting on the expected amount of traffic to cross it, and no mention of environmental impacts. All we know is they're going to build a bridge that should generate $7 million/year in tolls. News-Record editors, if this is reporting, I'm looking for a job.

Five mile bridge to no-where again? Fools Folly Bridge Express has as much opportunity to generate $7 million a year in tolls than the troll that lived under the bridge that the goats crossed. Fairy tales are a good reference when needed.

Rooster - Sorry you're disappointed by the AP story which, admittedly, isn't much. Which is why I linked to the Virginian-Pilot story -- it's a pretty long piece that gets into some of the issues you mentioned. The link is embedded in the second graf of the story.

Why are there so many comments pointing to reporting within the News Record. I think people forget they are reading content on the internet, inside the NR website, for free. Folks, if you think there are actual reporters behind these stories, you are right, however, they aren't paid by NR. Content is mostly derived from the internet elsewhere. No sense beating old bushes and criticizing what is pointlessly empty.
However, one does tend to wonder just what the point is of wasting space about a bridge to nowhere. It is certain no local interest who doesn't know about this bridge would read the story here.
I guess the hypocrisy points to myself as well. I do want to point out my motives. I like to comment on stuff, regardless of what its about.
