College football: Western Carolina gets first win of season

WESTERN CAROLINA 14, THE CITADEL 10: Dion Wilson ran for two touchdowns in the second half and Western Carolina beat The Citadel in Cullowhee.

Wilson scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter as the Catamounts (1-5, 1-3 Southern Conference) pulled to within 10-7, then scored the game-winner early in the fourth on a 5-yard run.

The Bulldogs (2-4, 0-3) missed two field goals in the second half and turned the ball over on downs twice in the fourth quarter.

After Wilson's second score gave the Catamounts a 14-10 lead, the Bulldogs turned the ball over at the Catamounts 36.

On the Bulldogs' next possession, Bart Blanchard's pass fell incomplete on fourth-and-3 from the Catamounts' 15-yard-line with two seconds remaining.

Blanchard went 9-for-11 for 94 yards for the Bulldogs.

CALIFORNIA-DAVIS 45, WINSTON-SALEM STATE 14: Greg Denham threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns as California-Davis picked up a homecoming victory over the Rams.

Jarrett Dunston had two touchdown passes for Winston-Salem State (0-6), which committed five turnovers.

GARDNER-WEBB 27, CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 20: Patrick Hall scored on a 16-yard run with 22 seconds left to lift Gardner-Webb to a 27-20 home win.

The Runnin' Bulldogs started the game-winning drive on their own 22-yard line with 1:50 remaining after the Buccaneers tied the game at 20-20.

Stan Doolittle sparked the 78-yard drive with 34 yards in the air and 7 yards rushing.

Doolittle finished with 184 yards on 16-of-25 passing and Hall had 118 yards and three touchdowns on three carries for Gardner-Webb (4-2, 2-0 Big South).

DAYTON 17, DAVIDSON 0: Steve Valentino threw for one touchdown and ran for another for the Flyers.

Valentino was 10-for-18 passing with 145 yards and an interception for Dayton (5-1, 3-0 Pioneer League), and rushed for 77 yards on 19 carries.

Justin Watkins caught five balls for 106 yards and a score.

The Flyers, who increased their record in the all-time series to 7-1, capitalized on four turnovers by the Wildcats (2-4, 2-2) in the game.

N.C. CENTRAL 52, CENTRAL METHODIST 7: Michael Johnson threw two touchdown passes for N.C. Central in its home victory.

NEWBERRY 35, WINGATE 27: Newberry posted 448 yards total offense to hand the Bulldogs their first conference loss.

SAINT AUGUSTINE'S 31, LIVINGSTONE 7: Saint Augustine's College stayed in the CIAA's Western Division hunt with an easy home victory.

OLD DOMINION 28, CAMPBELL 17: Thomas DeMarco passed for three touchdowns to lead the Monarchs.
