Dogs also suffer when a member of the family is diagnosed with cancer.
On Saturday , four-legged family members will get a chance to help fight the disease, too.
High Point Off Leash Dog Club will host Canines Against Cancer Bark for a Cure event from noon to 4 p.m. at Carolina Air Canine’s facility, also known as Bark & Fly Ranch, 8001 Clinard Farms Road in High Point.
Events include a tour of the facility; doggy games; demonstrations of flyball, dog diving, agility and canine disc; and information booths about High Point Off Leash Dog Club and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Carolina Triad affiliate.
David Cantara , owner of Carolina Air Canine and director of the private dog club, said October is a perfect time to host the event because it’s breast cancer awareness month.
In the past five years, Cantara said he has watched his father lose his fight with cancer, a close friend die of breast cancer and his wife’s aunt lose her battle, too. Through the years, Cantara also has seen many of his friends and clients battle cancer. Pets suffer along with those families.
Admission is $10. An additional $10 is required for pets to enter the doggy games — cutest couple, best beggar, largest dog, smallest dog, longest tail, shortest tail, etc.
All proceeds will go to the Triad affiliate of Susan G. Komen.
Although Carolina Air Canine is an off-leash area, Cantara asks that owners leash their pets for the event because of the large number of visitors expected.
The day also will serve as a grand opening and membership drive for High Point Off Leash Dog Club.
Cantara and Megan MacKenzie created High Point Off Leash Dog Club as a fundraising vehicle for pets. Fifty percent of annual club membership fees go to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure North Carolina Triad affiliate.
Fees are $300 for a year, $150 for six months and $30 for one month.
The club gets free use of Carolina Air Canine’s off-leash boarding and day care facility from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
The three-acre facility features an agility course, fly ball and a pond for diving.
Before using the park, dogs must have proof of updated vaccinations.
