LINCOLNTON (AP) — Leaders in Lincoln County have started the process of removing their sheriff after he was charged with helping to get rid of a physician's DWI ticket.
Multiple media reported today that Lincoln County commissioners voted unanimously to tell the county attorney to start legal proceedings to suspend and remove the sheriff.
Sheriff Tim Daugherty was indicted Monday on two counts of felony obstruction of justice, accusing him of a cover up to help stop a 2007 DWI investigation. He has pleaded innocent. Daugherty's former chief deputy was convicted of obstruction in the case.
Daugherty's attorney says the sheriff will not resign.
County officials can't remove Daugherty, but officials can ask the court to remove him.
