Northwest High School’s PTSA is trying to raise money for a new school sign by holding a community-wide Viking Bargain Sale from 8:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 31 in the student parking lot.

“The current sign is 30-plus years old,” said Connie Bruffey, sale coordinator. “We may or may not have a sign by the time my daughter, who’s a freshman, graduates, but we wanted to start a savings account for it.”

Bruffey said she is not sure what kind of sign will replace the old one, but she said a new sign similar to what they already have would cost about $10,000 and an electronic sign would cost about $25,000.

“Fundraising is down for all the booster clubs, so we wanted to come up with something unique,” Bruffey said of the bargain sale.

The public can rent two parking spaces for the sale for $15 and a table for $5.

A separate area will be designated for the sale of larger items. One hundred to 150 spaces are available. Sellers receive all their profits.

“Goodwill be coming, too, so if you don’t want to take stuff back home, they’ll take donations,” Bruffey said.

The school will be following Guilford County School guidelines, meaning no alcohol, weapons or tobacco products may be sold.

Bruffey said she would love to have another sale in the spring and make it a biannual Northwest event.

“This is a great way for any church group, club, Scouts group or booster organization to make quick money,” Bruffey said. “The more vendors we have, the more successful the event will be for everyone involved.”
