GREENSBORO — Bennett College will have a groundbreaking ceremony Friday for $21 million in capital projects.

The event will start at 11 a.m. at the Gorrell Street construction site next to Holgate Library. Local, state, federal and Bennett officials are expected to attend.

The project will add a 144-bed residence hall, a new global learning center with a 200-seat auditorium, an expansion of the Intergenerational Center and Children’s House and a wellness complex that will see upgrades to the gymnasium, tennis courts, soccer field and walking track.

The construction is the first on the campus of this all-women's college in more than two decades.

Most of the work should be done by the start of the fall 2010 semester. The completion date for the learning center is early 2011.

The construction follows the renovations of the science building, student union and heating plant, which was converted into the home for the journalism and mass studies department.
