N.C. State fires alumni association head

RALEIGH (AP) — The interim chancellor of N.C. State has fired the head of the school's alumni association.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported today that James Woodward said he acted because the group is struggling financially and its membership is stagnant. Woodward says associate vice chancellor Lennie Barton lacked a plan to change things, showing failed leadership.

Woodward said he was also concerned the association was using donations pledged to build a new alumni center for operating expenses.

Seven association board members last month told Woodward they heard Barton would be fired for refusing to censor an alumni magazine story about the Mary Easley scandal that included criticism of university leaders. Questions have been raised about the former first lady's hiring by the school.
