HENDERSONVILLE (AP) — The mayor of a western North Carolina city plans to challenge Democratic Congressman Heath Shuler's re-election effort next year.
The Asheville Citizen-Times reported today that Hendersonville Mayor Greg Newman hopes to carry the Republican Party banner against Shuler, a former NFL quarterback elected in 2006. Shuler already has $1 million in campaign funds.
Newman is a 47-year-old lawyer who has been Hendersonville's mayor since 2005.
Shuler won more than 60 percent of the vote last year to beat GOP challenger Carl Mumpower for the 11th Congressional District.
Shuler said in March he would not seek the U.S. Senate seat held by Republican Richard Burr, who is seeking re-election.
