Early goals power Greensboro College

GREENSBORO COLLEGE 2, GUILFORD 0: Brandon Perkins and Christian Johannesson scored in the first 22 minutes and Greensboro College's defense made the goals stand in a nonconference men's soccer match at Guilford College on Monday night.

The Pride (3-6-2) jumped on top when Perkins drilled a shot from 20 yards out in the fourth minute for a 1-0 lead.

The margin doubled in the 22nd minute when David Andreski's corner kick slipped through Guilford goalie Patrick Childs' hands and Johannesson headed it home.

Guilford (7-8-1) managed only one shot on goal in its third straight shutout loss.

Greensboro owned a 16-10 edge in shots. Junior Chad Adams made one save for the shutout and his third win in four appearances.

HONORS

GUILFORD: Sophomore Bri Eilman of the Guilford women's soccer team is the winner of the school's student-athlete of the week award.

GREENSBORO COLLEGE: Quarterback Seth Adams of Greensboro College is the freshman football player of the week in the USA South Conference. Forward Melissa Torzewski is the league's rookie of the week in women's soccer.

WAKE FOREST: Wake Forest defensive tackle John Russell is the ACC defensive lineman of the week. Senior forward Jill Hutchinson of the women's soccer team and senior forward Zack Schilawski of the men's soccer team were named to Top Drawer Soccer's national teams of the week.

DUKE: Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis of Duke is the offensive back of the week in the ACC. He was also named the Walter Camp Foundation's national offensive player of the week.

ELON: Freshman kicker Adam Shreiner of Elon is the Southern Conference freshman of the week in football.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

UNCG: UNCG's Sasha Skripkina won a three-set thriller over teammate Mikayla Rogers to win the Flight G title at the USTA Women's Tennis Collegiate Invitational in Flushing Meadows, N.Y. Skripkina, a freshman from Kiev, Ukraine, won the opening set 7-6, 10-8 in the tiebreaker. Rogers, a redshirt junior from Salem, Ore., bounced back to win the second set, 7-6, 7-3 in the tiebreaker. However, Skripkina won the final set by a 6-4 score to with the flight championship.

MEN'S GOLF

GUILFORD: Guilford's Noah Ratner shot 73-75--148 to help the Quakers to sixth place after 36 holes of the 12-team Davidson College Invitational at the River Run Country Club. The Quakers are four strokes behind fifth-place Radford. Liberty owns a two-stroke lead over Wofford. Elon is in ninth place.

WOMEN'S GOLF

HIGH POINT: High Point finished day one of the Richmond Spider Invitational in 12th place out of 15 teams. Junior Leahanna Newton and sophomore Laura Reynolds are tied for 22nd.
