GREENSBORO — It’s been a long road, but Susie has almost found her way to a home.
Interviews are set to begin in the next week for potential families to take in the pit bull-mix puppy, found beaten and burned in Greenfield Park in south Greensboro on Aug. 20.
“We are really impressed and amazed at how she’s recovering,” said Marsha Williams, director of the Guilford County Animal Shelter.“We didn’t think it would happen this quickly.”
In all, 60 people have signed up to adopt the puppy. Shelter officials will interview families, do home visits and narrow down the list to families that can take care of her.
Once that is done, Williams said, a drawing is likely to be held to determine who will take in the dog.
Susie was found with severe second- and third-degree burns over most of her body. Her ears were burned off. She also had a broken jaw and teeth.
Veterinarians estimated she had been abandoned in the park for about two weeks before she was found by a man walking through the park.
Because of extensive veterinary care during the past two months, Williams said Susie will likely face no long-term effects from her injuries.
However, because the flaps over her ears were burned off, she will have to be an inside dog and will require sunblock when she’s outside, Williams said.
“She loves people and has no fears,” Williams said. “She is doing really well.”
