Area briefs: Highly regarded 6-8 power forward commits to NCSU

Luke Cothron of Flora MacDonald Academy in Red Springs has verbally committed to N.C. State, several recruiting Web sites reported Friday. Cothron, a 6-foot-8, 205-pound power forward originally from Alabama, is rated the 13th-best player at his position in the country, according to Scout.com. He also drew recruiting interest from Connecticut, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisville, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Alabama-Birmingham and West Virginia.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

N.C. A&T: LaCherish Reed, a 5-foot-8 guard from Charlotte, has committed to play basketball at N.C. A&T, the North Carolina Flight Girls Basketball Organization announced. Reed will sign a national letter of intent during the early period, which begins Nov. 11. She averaged 16.0 points, 4.6 steals, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists as a junior in leading Hickory Grove Christian (30-1) to the NCISAA 3-A state title.

VOLLEYBALL

NORFOLK STATE 3, N.C. A&T 0: Sophomore Nicole Kessner had a career-high 10 kills and added a match-high 24 assists to lead Norfolk State to a 25-21, 25-11, 26-24 win over N.C. A&T.

GREENSBORO COLLEGE 3, AVERETT 2: Brittany Hunsucker had 17 kills and collected 14 digs as Greensboro College defeated Averett 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 15-25, 15-8. Kacie Hyatt had 11 kills.

N.C. WESLEYAN 3, GUILFORD 1: Senior Brittany Insley fell just two blocks shy of a triple-double (19 kills, 10 digs, 8 blocks) in N.C. Wesleyan's 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 28-26 win over Guilford.

UNC-ASHEVILLE 3, HIGH POINT 0: High Point dropped a 25-21, 25-17, 25-18 decision to UNC-Asheville.

MEN'S SOCCER

NO. 18 N.C. STATE 1, NO. 9 DUKE 0 (OT): N.C. State's Ronnie Bouemboue scored with 49 seconds left in the second overtime to lift the 18th-ranked Wolfpack.

NO. 2 NORTH CAROLINA 2, NO. 6 WAKE FOREST 2 (OT): Junior midfielder Michael Farfan assisted on No. 2 North Carolina's first goal and scored its second to lead the Tar Heels in a tie with No. 6 Wake Forest. The Tar Heels are 8-1-2 and 3-1-1 in the ACC, while the Deacons are 7-2-2 and 2-1-1.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

GARDNER-WEBB 1, HIGH POINT 0: Megan Reimer scored the game's only goal to lead Gardner-Webb past High Point.

WOMEN'S GOLF

TAR HEEL INVITATIONAL: Duke freshman Courtney Ellenbogen shot a two-under-par 70 at the Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill and is one shot off the lead, held by Laura Kueny of Michigan State. Wake Forest junior Natalie Sheary shot a 71, putting the Deacs in fifth place.
