GREENSBORO — A man pleaded guilty Monday to voluntary manslaughter in the August 2007 fatal shooting of a man in Claremont Homes.

Superior Court Judge James Webb sentenced Willis Miles Mahatha Jr., 33, to spend at least 94 months in state prison for the death of 38-year-old Joseph Lee Milford Jr., 38, on Aug. 11, 2007, according to Guilford County Assistant District Attorney Robert Enochs.

Mahatha took the voluntary manslaughter plea as part of a deal with prosecutors that avoided trial on a charge of first-degree murder.

Enochs said the killing was the result of a series of arguments between the two men, who were neighbors, that escalated into violence.

Mahatha shot Milford during a struggle on Milford’s back porch at 2708-B Patio Place.

Milford was shot three times, once in the left thigh and twice in the back. He later died at Cone Hospital.
