Student council members at Eastern Guilford High School are gearing up for a community parade downtown that will open homecoming week celebrations.
The parade along Main Street is at 2 p.m. Sunday.
“We’re gonna turn it out,” said Chantel Coltrane, a 17-year-old senior. “It’s going to be fun. ... I’m pretty sure it’s going to be better than last year.”
Community members packed the streets last year to watch the inaugural parade, so the school decided to make it an annual event.
“We felt it was such a success last year,” said Tarnae Offhaus, who advises the student council. “It was a great way to bring the school and the community together,”
Students want alumni to sign up to decorate their vehicles to show Eastern pride and drive the “spirit cars” in the parade. Only a few alumni have registered so far. The council also is looking for convertibles to carry the homecoming court.
Each grade will decorate a float with a different theme, and school clubs will build floats, too. The marching band will play music as the sports, cheerleading, step teams and other groups walk the parade route.
The homecoming game is at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 16. The Wildcats will play Rockingham County High School.
Participants in the parade will gather at 1 p.m. To register a spirit car, which is free, or to help with the parade, contact Offhaus at 449-6311.
