WINSTON-SALEM — Two Winston-Salem police officers were shot on Peters Creek Parkway this morning.
The suspect in the incident was fatally shot. Police identified the man as Monte Denard Evans, 35, of Winston-Salem.
Winston-Salem city spokesman Ed McNeal said that 50-year-old Sgt. Mickey Hutchens and 28-year-old Officer Daniel Clark were seriously injured and transported to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.Hutchens is in critical condition and Clark is in serious condition at the hospital.
Multiple media outlets are reporting that the incident happened about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday near the Bojangles restaurant at 1535 Peters Creek Parkway.
According to Assistant Police Chief Barry Rountree, police received a call from a female employee at the restaurant who advised that her ex-husband was in the area.
The two officers responded and pursued Evans on foot into Salem Creek, where they were both shot. The suspect was shot and killed.
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Hutchens is a patrol supervisor in District Three and a 27-year veteran of the force. Officer Clark has been with the department for five years.
WXII-TV reported that Forsyth County Sheriff Bill Schatzman visited the hospital's emergency room and said the officers were wounded in "critical places."
The Winston-Salem Journal reported that Alpha Commercial Printing owner Daryl Hinshaw said he saw one officer on the ground. Hinshaw said other officers ran toward a creek, after which he heard multiple gunshots.
