Area briefs: No. 3 Wake Forest visits UNCG today in men's soccer

No. 3 Wake Forest continues its out-of-conference schedule tonight when it travels to Greensboro to face UNCG. Kickoff at UNCG Soccer Stadium is 7 p.m. The Deacons are 3-0 in road contests this season, posting victories at Indiana, Clemson and Virginia Tech. UNCG enters tonight's match with a 3-4-3 overall record. The Spartans carry a four-game unbeaten streak into the game, including a 2-2 tie at Wofford last Saturday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

EAST CAROLINA: John Gutekunst has joined the East Carolina football staff as an assistant coach. Gutekunst will fill in for Rock Roggeman, who left ECU on Sept. 28 on indefinite medical leave.

RECRUITING

WYATT PICKS NAVY: Dudley High School point guard Brennan Wyatt plans to sign a basketball scholarship with Navy, according to the recruiting Web site Scout.com. The 5-foot-10 guard drew interest from Columbia, UNCG, Appalachian State, Bucknell, Cornell, Georgia Southern, Harvard, Richmond and Western Carolina.

HIGH POINT: Guard Justin Cheek of Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte has given his verbal commitment to play basketball at High Point, according to Scout.com. Cheek, a 6-foot-2, 175-pound shooting guard, averaged 17.2 points last season and drew recruiting interest from Appalachian State. He is the younger brother of Joy Cheek, a senior on the Duke women's basketball team. Their father, Boris Cheek, is an NFL referee.

HONORS

ELON: Terrell Hudgins of Elon is the Football Championship Subdivision national offensive player of the week. Hudgins broke Jacquay Nunnaly's NCAA Division I record for career receptions and finished with 16 catches for 209 yards in Elon's 19-12 victory last Saturday at Furman.

ACC: Wake Forest quarterback Riley Skinner and Miami offensive tackle Jason Fox headline the ACC players of the week.

GUILFORD: Guilford College's Jordan Nelson is the ODAC defensive football player of the week.

GREENSBORO COLLEGE: Greensboro College women's soccer players Kelli Viana and Cara Wilcox earned player of the week honors in the USA South Conference.

LOWE'S SENIOR CLASS AWARD: UNCG senior defender Lauren Lopez has been named one of the 10 national finalists for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award. The award celebrates excellence in the classroom, character, community and competition. Wake Forest senior forward Zack Schilawski and North Carolina senior defender Kristi Evelandis are also finalists.

MEN'S GOLF

UNCG: UNCG freshman Robert Hoadley is at four-over 148 after two rounds at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Intercollegiate in Choudrant, La. The Spartans are in 16th place. New Orleans leads.

HIGH POINT: High Point is in fourth place out of 14 teams after the first day of the Frank Landrey Invitational in Gordonsville, Va.

MEN'S SOCCER

DEMPSEY OUT: Ex-Furman standout Clint Dempsey will miss the United States' World Cup qualifier at Honduras on Saturday because of a sprained right shoulder.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

CHARLESTON SOUTHERN 2, HIGH POINT 1: Senior goalkeeper Marisa Abbott recorded nine saves to break High Point's Division I career saves record in a loss to Charleston Southern.

ELON-GREENSBORO COLLEGE: Elon has added a home game with Greensboro College on Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. at Rudd Field. The game replaces the cancelled contest with VMI which was originally scheduled for Aug. 28 in Lexington, Va.

AUTO RACING

CARAWAY SPEEDWAY: Winston Salem's Jimmy Wallace captured the first 25-lap Twin event in the Late Model Super Truck ranks Saturday night at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro. Denton's Clint King won the second race.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

CHINA OPEN: Dinara Safina lost to Chinese wild card Zhang Shuai 7-5, 7-6 (5) in the second round of the China Open, a result that could lead to Serena Williams taking the No. 1 ranking.
